How to Get a Power of Attorney Notarized at a Hospital in Alexandria

When a parent or loved one is in the hospital, a power of attorney (POA) often becomes urgent fast. Maybe a procedure is scheduled. Maybe the care team needs someone authorized to make decisions. Whatever brought you here, here’s how to get it notarized at the bedside without losing your afternoon.
First, what a notary actually does
A notary verifies identity and witnesses a signature. That’s it. I don’t draft the document, and I don’t give legal advice. If you don’t have a POA drawn up yet, you’ll want an attorney or a valid template first. Once you have the document, notarizing it is the quick part.
Who needs to be there
For a hospital POA signing, you generally need a few people in the room.
- The principal. That’s the person granting the power, usually the patient. They have to sign in front of me.
- A valid photo ID for the signer. Unexpired, government-issued. This is the piece families forget most.
- Witnesses, if the document requires them. Many POAs and advance directives ask for one or two. I can tell you what yours needs.
A quick note that matters. The signer has to be able to understand what they’re signing. If their ability to understand is in question, I’ll ask for confirmation from their physician before we proceed. I take that seriously, because a signature done at the wrong moment can be challenged later, exactly when your family can least afford it.
What to have ready before I arrive
A short list makes the visit fast and calm.
- The unsigned document. Don’t sign it ahead of time. I have to witness the signature.
- A valid photo ID for every person signing.
- The room number and any check-in steps the hospital requires.
- Witnesses lined up, if the document calls for them. In a pinch, I can talk through options.
